What is Talk for Writing? 

A whole-school framework for developing confident, creative and independent writers. Talk for Writing is a structured approach to teaching writing, developed by Pie Corbett. It is based on how learners acquire language: by hearing and imitating effective models, exploring how texts work, adapting familiar patterns and gradually applying their learning independently.

We use Talk for Writing as a cumulative, whole-school framework. Children learn to read and write for a range of audiences and purposes, while teaching moves deliberately from strong teacher modelling and shared practice towards confident independence.

Why the approach is effective

• Oral rehearsal comes first. Children “talk the text” before writing, internalising vocabulary, sentence patterns and text structure.

• High-quality reading models writing. â€‹A rich reading spine of fiction, poetry and non-fiction gives children language and patterns to draw upon. 

• Small steps reduce overload. Ideas and organisation can be developed separately from handwriting, spelling and punctuation, before being brought together.

• Assessment shapes teaching. A baseline “cold task” identifies strengths and next steps; a later “hot task” demonstrates progress and informs future teaching.

The consistent sequence is:  IMITATION  →  INNOVATION  →  INDEPENDENT APPLICATION
